An audio recording is in Box 52 and the accompanying videotape is in Box 58 of Warfield Special Collection, Fenwick Library, George Masn University.
George Johnson, President of George Mason University was one of six invited speakers from university faculty and staff to participate in Warfield's Great University Seminars. At each seminar Warfield gave a short presentation, and then response or rejoinder was given by guest lecturer. Audio tapes were made of all the sessions, and President Johnson's lecture was also videotaped.
Held at GMU during the academic year 1989-1990, this was a series of six presentations by Dr. Warfield on the subject of Higher Education, each with an invited response from GMU administrators or faculty. The purpose of the seminar series was "to explore the concept of what would constitute a great university, and how such an institution might be established." This was a joint project of the Institute for Advanced Study in the Integrative Sciences and the Communication Department at the university. The seminars were held in a conference room at Student Union Building II.
In Box 24, Folder 43 is a printout of the computer file "seminars.doc" containing the abstracts and discussion outlines only. It is in MICROSOFT WORD-6, typed by Bonnie Seitz. (John Warfield has never proof read Bonnie's typed manuscript). The materials typed by Bonnie were printed and used in 1996 as part of the six-volume set titled EDUCATION PAPERS BY WARFIELD.
There are also in Box 24, Folder 19 the WordPerfect or Word manuscripts holding these same abstracts and discussion outlines of the series, originally prepared by Warfield and distributed at each of the six presentations. Each handout consisted more or less of an abstract of the talk given that day, a list of references, a list of questions (which was a list of topics which Warfield used as a take-off point, when doing his actual lecture), and a list of propositions which were essentially a set of conclusions or beliefs which Warfield was trying to urge onto his audience at each lecture).
In addition, in Box 24, Folders 22 through 27, there are the beginnings of manuscripts which when polished will be TRANSCRIPTS OF THE LIVE SESSIONS, derived from five audio tapes of seminars 1 through 5, and a videotape of Seminar No. 6. This transcript work is unfinished, but what has been done so far is crammed into the same folder with other Great University Seminar papers.
We got Wendy Fry, one of the office assistants, to do the transcribing when she worked at Warfield's office during 1995-1995. We had computer files of all of Wendy's transcriptions, once, somewhere, but I can't find them now. If I ever find them I will move them into the c:invnrwjwpapers folder. (The audio tapes were in this same manuscripts folder at one time, but in October 2000 were moved to AV & VIDEO collection, and shipped to Fenwick Library Special Collections Dept where they are now in Box 52.)
