John paid part of Ben's salary for the spring and fall semsters of 1997, and in return Ben was to write a decent User Guide for the Windows software. Which he finally did, bringing this draft to John in late 1997. The document is quite good since Ben has been using the software for about 4 years, and is familiar with all of its quirks. Ben copied a lot of the material for this guide from the ISMDOS guide which John had written several years earlier, using same format and style, etc. Ben placed several notes throughout on how to deal with the bugs in the software which still remain. One major deficiency in Ben's Guide is lack of instructions on how to print when using the ISM Windows software. Alas, the software itself has never been updated, although John was trying to get Ben interested in doing so, possibly collaborating with Mr. Ma on a Version 2 which would eliminate the bugs. The draft is quite well done, except that Appendix D is missing. Appendix D was to be a set of drawings or figures displaying the different types of structural maps. Ben did not include these, saying he would provide them later.. Also there are no instructions telling the user how to print using the ISM Windows software, which is unfortunate, since printing out the results is a pretty important part of the operation. Ben made a carefully detailed description of each of the software bugs, and on Nov. 18, 1997 when giving the document to John, Ben asked that we send a copy to Mr. Dangsheng Ma, in hopes that Mr. Ma could be persuaded to make corrections to the software in order to get rid of the bugs. So Rose made extra copies, and mailed one to Dangsheng on Nov. 19. Dangsheng had by then graduated and left the university, moving to his new job in Greensboro, NC. Ben hoped that Dangsheng might have time or interest in removing the bugs, but this never happened.
