Preguntas Dr. Warfield is transcript of a video-taped interview of John Warfield by Roxana Cardenas, Chairman of the Systems Engineering Department at Instituto Tecnol├│gico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Mexico. In this interview Dr. Warfield responds to questions from the Tech Institute faculty and staff regarding his recently published book A Science of Generic Design. The book had recently been undertaken as a group study project in Monterrey. The questions were translated from Spanish into English by Professor Cardenas, who then brought them from Mexico on the occasion of her attendance at the 1991 meeting of the AAAS (American Association for
the Advancement of Science) in Washington, D.C.
The interview was videotaped on the campus of George Mason University, in Fairfax, Virginia on February 23, 1991. As the tape begins, we hear the voice of Professor Ben Broome of George Mason University. Dr. Broome had arranged for the videotaping, and had set up the equipment. He is speaking about the workings of the camera, before they start the interview. Occasionally through the interview we will also hear background street noises, since the recording was made in a university classroom, not a soundproof studio.
Some time afterwards, Rose got a studio to make an audio recording of the videotape, and we also have those audio tapes. The audio work was done by students at ITESM, in the electronics lab there, we got Roxana to arrange the taping during one of our Mexico trips.
Edited by Rose Warfield, this transcript is designed for reader convenience, while keeping as completely as possible the spoken words of the videotaped interview. Captions have been inserted as headings for the questions. A number of footnotes have been added, giving citations for books and articles, along with other notes concerning the topics discussed. In addition, the running commentary of John Warfield has been broken up into paragraphs and sentences, for clarity. Words which are surrounded by brackets were not in the original video, but have been added during editing, for clarification.
