Emerging Areas for OR Application in Road Transport

Sent to John by the author in December 2007 Abstract: Numerous issues in planning, operations and management of road transport have been subjected to OR techniques in the past. The advancements in the information technology which are expected to bring about revolutionary changes in the road transport scene offer new challenges. The developments in the fields of telecommunications in general and computers, in particular, provide opportunities which can be furthered by interfacing with OR techniques. In this paper, few emerging areas for OR application namely, system capacity utilisation, just in time delivery scheduling, safety measures evaluation, passnger orientation improvement and transport model extension are presented. The vast scope for incorporating OR models in the framework of computer based Geographic Information Systems is discused. An application of Generic Design Science to Capture the relevant dimnsions for modelling a road transport problem is also illustrated.
