Metrics of Complexity: Toward the Union of Systems, Cybernetics, and Complexity

A discussion of available methods for determining whether or not a given situation is complex, and if so, how complex, from a mathematical standpoint. Also explores how the complexity is treated if using Warfield’s methods of Nominal Group Technique and Interpretive Structural Modeling. See also, “Metrics for Measuring Complexity.”

At first I thought GMU did not have this paper, but I was wrong, GMU DOES HAVE a DIGITIZED VERSION BUT THEY DON'T KNOW IT. It is ON DVD 2 OF 2 There are two versions of the paper on DVD2, in the folder named ""22-OBSTACLES-categories" one in filename "Draft4-MetricsofComplexity" dated 22 April 22, 2006 and another in filename "metrics stuff.wpd" dated 11 Feb 11, 2007.wpd. I had already made a pdf scan of the document found in JohnWarfield's boxes, now I have found the WordPerfect original documents, and discovered  he had discussed these ideas in lectures circa 2000 and 2001 and this    the more recent WordPerfect computer document date was 2006. so even though the stuff was repeated again in John Warfield's book, using even some of the same words, this 2006 paper is still a good article, worth saving, because it is short and simple concentrating on only one topic. The 10 page paper seems complete with abstract and references, although the paper is not very long. It is a discussion of methods for determining whether or not a given situation is complex, and if so, how complex, from a mathematical standpoint, AND HOW THE COMPLEXITY IS TREATED IF USING WARFIELD'S METHODS OF NOMINAL GROUP TECHNIQUE AND INTERPRETIVE STRUCTUAL MODELING.

. During the time period 2000 to 2001 JohnWarfield gave several lectures on this topic, one of which was a videotaped presentation done in June 2000. The video and a DVD conversion are both stored at Rose's apartment, along with this unpublished paper. WARFIELDS STILL OWN THE VIDEO AS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. Other lectures on metrics of complexity were slide shows, which are now at GMU. GMU DOES HAVE THE SLIDES, that is, they have in the Warfield Collection HARD COPY PRINTOUTS OF THE Metrics of Complexity SLIDES AND ALSO DIGITAL COPIES of the paper ON compact disk, IN THEIR STORAGE, AT LEAST WE SENT THEM TO FENWICK LIBRARY. I made a pdf file of this paper for my home computer, because not found in my collection of JohnWarfield's papers, but I believed the WwordPerfect version is at Dan'st house, with other files he is saving from JohnWarfield's computer. If Dan finds it he should try to make a record of the DATE of the computer file on JohnWarfield’s computer I am guessing the date, based on the dates of the references and the other stuff, but I finally found the wordperfectWordPerfect document on my own computer as well. ===============

Later I looked into JohnWarfield's book An Introduction to Systems Science, and I can see that all the ideas and much of the actual wording of this paper has been published in that book in 2006. What he put in the book is scattered through several parts of the book not this entire paper all in one place. I think this paper is good and worth the trouble of publishing, in spite of the above.

r.w. circa January 2013
