Interpretive Structural Modeling and the Sigma-4 Process
Workshop presented 20-21 May 1982 at University of Sao Paulo, and 27-28 May 1982 at IBM Science Center, Brasilia, Brazil.
“Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM)”: Chapter 5 in Shirley. A. Olsen,(Ed.), Group Planning & Problem Solving Methods in Engineering
Presented as Chapter 5 of Olsen's book, this article describes the wide scope of current applications of Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM), lists technical and procedural details for its efficient use. Includes a review of the mathematical theory supporting its software programs and a response to critics.
“Interpretive Structural Modeling,” in M. Singh, ed., Systems and Control Encyclopedia
A general description of ISM, its development, intellectual history, and uses. Due to space limitations, the mathematical theory is omitted, but references are provided for other works by Warfield which contain this theory.
Annotated Bibliography: Interpretive Structural Modeling and Related Work, Revised 1990 Edition (Part 1)
Click here for part 2. All of the books and papers listed in this bibliography were published between the years 1959-1981. They are all related in some way to the development of Warfield's Interactive Management methodology. This edition is a combination of three previous bibliographies: “Interpretive Structural Modelling and Related Work, 1980;” “Interpretive Structural Modeling and Related Work, Supplement #1, 1981;” and “Digest of Annotated Bibliography: Interpretive Structural Modeling and Related Work, 1982.” Written by Warfield while he was a professor at the University of Virginia, the three bibliographies were the first to give sources of information about the theory and applications and possible future uses of ISM. Significant early books on symbolic logic and Boolean algebra are listed, followed by a chronological listing of the development of the ISM theory in Warfield's work and in many papers and books about his work, written by others.
Interpretive Structural Modeling and Related Work: Annotated Bibliography, Supplement #1. Center for Interactive Management Report No. 1-B
A supplement to the June 1980 bibliography of the same title, this report contains 22 additional titles, with annotations, of papers dealing with the topic of structural modeling, interpretative structural modeling, or significantly similar fields of study. The revised 1990 edition combines both. See “Interpretive Structural Modeling and Related Work: Annotated Bibliography, Revised Edition (Part 1)” and “Annotated Bibliography: Interpretive Structural Modeling and Related Work, Revised 1990 Edition (Part 2).”
Interpretive Structural Modeling in 1997
An outline of invited lecture presented on PictureTel from George Mason University to ITESM (Mexico) faculty and students, 13 March 1997 [Mexican title is: ISM Software].
Interpretive Structural Modeling: Presentation
The document or paper used for this talk is missing. Presented at Annual Meeting of Operations Research Society of America and The Institute of Management Science (ORSA/TIMS) 13 October 1981, Houston, Texas.
Interpretive Structural Modeling: An Introduction to the Foundations, Method and Applications of a Useful Idea
A comprehensive overview of Interpretive Structural Modeling, including an account of the historical development of the use of ISM and a long bibliography. Submitted for publication in the journal Decision Sciences, but not accepted, however still significant because it reveals IBM interest and knowledge about ISM in the early 1980's. The file folder includes correspondence between the three authors.
Interpretation of Problematique for Policy Research
Computer printouts, dated 13 January 1995, of the Problematique produced by the students in their ISM session. Includes a description of the type of interpretation and analysis of Problematiques that should be expected from an IM Facilitator. The purpose of the document was not only to report results from a typical Interpretive Modeling Session (as a learning experience), but also to demonstrate and describe Interactive Management methodology to students who had experienced it for the first time, showing the IM documentation procedures, format and techniques for USING information gained during the ISM session and organizing it in a manner which could be informative and useful to the participants. Part of the of the course material for a TIPP Course “Demands of Complexity on Writing and Research” Warfield taught at GMU, 9-11 January.
