A Course in Generic Design for Engineers (1985 version)
Discussion of key ideas and sequencing of Warfield’s generic design system. Provides an outline for a college-level course in generic design. Emphasizes the concept of laws for generic engineering design. Includes graphic and discussion of Sigma-5 strategy for dealing with complexity. See also, “Education in Generic Design” and papers with the same name written in 1984 and 1995.
Roxana Cardenas, E-mail, 16 August 1996
Roxana Cardenas, from Monterrey, Mexico, describes her success in obtaining a situation room in her ITESM Systems Engineering department, similar to the DEMOSOPHIA room at George Mason University.
Warfield Donates Lifetime of Research to University
Original write-up of an article printed in George Mason University’s newspaper that covers Warfield’s donation of his papers to the school. Includes Warfield’s commentary on the article and communications with the author.
Correlating Interactive Management With the Twenty Laws of Complexity
Argues that Interactive Management should be integrated into a university program. Asserts that the current system of higher education is ill-equipped to deal with an increasingly complex world.
Corrective System for Minimizing TACAN-DME Spurious Radiation
Published while Warfield was at Wilcox Electric company in Kansas City, Missouri, in his sabbatical year off from KU. The same year in which he worked on the transponder contract. The corporate observatorium (Abstract)
Provides concise description of Warfield’s “observatorium.” See also, “The Corporate Observatorium: Sustaining Management Communication and Continuity in an Age of Complexity.”
Copyright Release Permissions for A Science of Generic Design (2nd backup copy)
A second back up copy of the permissions for the book. This backup contains only photocopies of signed releases. See “Copyright Release Permissions for A Science of Generic Design.”
Copyright Release Permissions for A Science of Generic Design
Material related to the publication of A Science of Generic Design. Includes correspondence, signed releases, complete list of all permissions used, copies of most of the articles from which the borrowed material was taken, and a complete backup copy of the packet of permission materials which was mailed to Intersystems publishers in 1990.
Cooperative Nonaccountability in Organizations: How to Prevent Cybernetic Principles from Functioning
Concludes that by failing to correct systemic deficiencies, top managers of organizations prevent cybernetic principles from functioning. Therefore, they must take the full 85 percent of the burden for low quality that otherwise would blandly be attributed to the system. Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Cybernetics, 19-23 February 1986, Virginia Beach, VA.
Contrasts: A Short Course
Begins with discussion of the successes and failures and question marks of Warfield’s IM methodology. Includes a preliminary history of systems engineering listing his view of the good and bad things about system engineering. Proceeds to focus on the need to recognize of the difference between intellectual cultures, and how they are used to meet current problems. Presented at the Nov. 19 session of NASA Systems Requirements 4 (REQ4), a Short Course held at Holiday Inn Executive Center, Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, VA 17-22 November 1996.
