Manuscript available at Fenwick Library in the Warfield Collection, written circa 1977 as one of the documents connected with a US Department of Education contract supporting research toward a system of improved environmental education studies nationwide. Discussion of the importance of, and history behind, scientific language. Includes suggestion of new terminologies and a new approach to integrative studies, based in language design. Presented at Annual Meeting of Association for Integrative Studies (AIS) held at St. Anselm College, Manchester, New Hampshire, 1-4 November 1990.
An Interactive Management Report on a Workshop facilitated by Benjamin Broome. Contains figure diagram of JOPES Problematique. Held 6-8 December 1995, Fair Lakes, Fairfax County, Virginia. JOPES REPORT, draft, "On Redesigning Of The Joint Planning & Execution Program" 1995.
A proposal to improve and articulate the connection between systems studies and the accumulated body of knowledge. Building on ideas from Popper and Peirce, among others, Warfield introduces his concept of a 'Cosmic Partition' containing the divisions Library, Phaneron and Residue. Presented at Annual Meeting Society for General Systems Research, Los Angeles, CA, 27-31 May 1985. See also, "Some Laws and Principles of Design," which he presented at the same conference, and "Relating the Blocks…
Discussion of the potential future of digital computers and the possibility of a “creative machine.”
Presents the idea that language is definable in terms of seven different 'key language types,' that an understanding of these types and their functions support the basic design practices which must be used to build efficient and usable systems for use by human beings. Thirteen specific criteria are listed to assist in the judging and/or constructing of a systems design, based on the design's use of language. Won the award for the Best Paper at…
No information, the paper is at Fenwick Library. I didn’t read it before sending, so can’t give description.
A technical and mathematical description of the Options Field method. Includes figures and graph examples. The “Quad” concept is introduced and explored. Used for classes taught at University of Virginia and George Mason University.
A presentation packet of transparencies and/or handout pages on the Options Field/Options Profile Method for use in classes or lectures. See notes field for list of other writings on this subject.
Excerpts from previously published articles used as classroom handouts.
A partial draft with attached memo stating that it is being sent to colleagues. Includes comments from one reviewer.
A draft of a paper that was an outgrowth of “Options Profiles” and intended for publication.
One of several “self-paced learning units” Warfield developed and used for classes he taught. Item missing.

This is a nine page FAX message, sent from Scott Staley to John Warfield on 2 April 1992. It is a draft copy of pages 1-8 and pages 153-159 of a Ford Report titled “Application of Interactive Management to System-wide Planning for Analytical Powertrain.” This Ford Report was a 160 page document reporting on the first Interactive Management Workshop for Ford Motor Company, held in April 1992 at the Ford facilities in Dearborn, Michigan. See…
This essay draws on a longer paper by Warfield titled: "Structural Thinking: Producing Effective Organizational Change in Organizations" and talks about ways to fix organizational problems.
Three complementary, but distinct, tasks were carried out to structure complexity, based on different parts of the available material. In the first approach, 20 Laws of Complexity developed over the course of the research, were placed in five categories. Three of them involve human behavior: Habitual Behavior, Physiological Behavior, and Organizational Behavior; one category involves Communication Media; and one category involves Mathematical Operations. In the second approach, over 500 transparencies were organized into 14 categories…
With this paper Warfield attempts to design a set of basic principles and guide lines taking into account all facets of systems problems including behavioral approaches of the participants for systems managers. A generic systems discipline, so to speak. The contents list Behavioral Concepts, Science, Communication: Thought, Belief and Truth, Communication: Mutual Understanding, Communication: Assistance Through Formalisms; Modeling: Types of Models, Complexity: Overview, Complexity: Metrics and Measurements, Complexity: Communication in Organizations, Complexity: Non-Linear Structural Models,…
