Overview Inclusion Structure for Warfield Collection
A diagram Warfield developed to display, on a single page, the extent of his academic papers collection. Prepared for George Mason University Special Collections and Archives while his papers were being reviewed for archiving. Two other papers are accompaniments to this graphic, and were sent at approximately the same time, they are "The John Warfield Collection" written 19 July 2000 and "A Narrative Overview of the "Warfield Collection" written as a final version 23 October 2000.
Oversight and Steering for Effective System Design
This paper suggests that much more emphasis on philosophy, logic, linguistics, psychology and generic design science be included in a curriculum for educating and training more powerful managers and designers than are now in operation. It is a second, companion paper written for the St. Louis meeting, as a follow-up to "Detractors to Effective System Design." Presented at the Annual Meeting of the International Society for General Systems Research, 23-27 May 1988, Omni Hotel, St. Louis, Missouri.
Origins and Remedies for Situational Complexity in Organizations
Warfield shows how to overcome complexity using Interactive Management. A collection of transparencies printed as an IASIS "Report" or monograph, which focuses on solutions for improving productivity in organizations. The booklet contains photocopies of transparencies used in talks given by Warfield in Mexico City and in Tokyo in October and November of 1994. Topics covered are: 1. Overview of the presentation; 2. Ordinary and Complex Situations; 3. Language and Complexity; 4. Group Behavior and Complexity; 5. Framebreaking and Complexity; 6. Remodeling and Complexity; 7. Reasons for Poor Intellectual Productivity; 8. Conclusions
Orientation in Conceptual Space: A Challenge Facing the System Designer
With this paper Warfield attempts to design a set of basic principles and guide lines taking into account all facets of systems problems including behavioral approaches of the participants for systems managers. A generic systems discipline, so to speak. The contents list Behavioral Concepts, Science, Communication: Thought, Belief and Truth, Communication: Mutual Understanding, Communication: Assistance Through Formalisms; Modeling: Types of Models, Complexity: Overview, Complexity: Metrics and Measurements, Complexity: Communication in Organizations, Complexity: Non-Linear Structural Models, Summary: System Designer Orientation
Organizing Complexity from the Bottom Up
Three complementary, but distinct, tasks were carried out to structure complexity, based on different parts of the available material. In the first approach, 20 Laws of Complexity developed over the course of the research, were placed in five categories. Three of them involve human behavior: Habitual Behavior, Physiological Behavior, and Organizational Behavior; one category involves Communication Media; and one category involves Mathematical Operations. In the second approach, over 500 transparencies were organized into 14 categories which, in turn, were organized into four areas. The four areas are: Site of Applications, Applications of Science, Sciences, and Infrastructure of Science. In the third approach, 21 essays on complexity were organized into six categories. These are Organizational Flaws, Linguistic Constraints, Views on Complexity, Science and Organizational Behavior, Organizational Enhancements, and University Redesign
Organizations and Structural Thinking
This essay draws on a longer paper by Warfield titled: "Structural Thinking: Producing Effective Organizational Change in Organizations" and talks about ways to fix organizational problems.
An Example IM Workshop Plan (1992 Draft)
This is a nine page FAX message, sent from Scott Staley to John Warfield on 2 April 1992. It is a draft copy of pages 1-8 and pages 153-159 of a Ford Report titled “Application of Interactive Management to System-wide Planning for Analytical Powertrain.” This Ford Report was a 160 page document reporting on the first Interactive Management Workshop for Ford Motor Company, held in April 1992 at the Ford facilities in Dearborn, Michigan. See also, “An Example IM Workshop Plan (Restored)” and “An Example IM Workshop Plan (IM Workshop Prototype Plan).”
The Oral Presentation: A Self-Paced Learning Unit
One of several “self-paced learning units” Warfield developed and used for classes he taught. Item missing.
Options Profiles and Policy Synthesis
A draft of a paper that was an outgrowth of “Options Profiles” and intended for publication.
Options Profiles -Partial draft
A partial draft with attached memo stating that it is being sent to colleagues. Includes comments from one reviewer.
